Effective use of water resources

In line with the Environmental Policy, the SCREEN Group aims to reduce impacts on the aquatic environment and the ecosystems it contains by systematically promoting water resource management in business activities. In particular, we recognize that the Lake Biwa-Yodo River system, where our six major business sites, including our Head Office, are located, is an extremely valuable aquatic environment in terms of natural and social science. Accordingly, we work to maintain it as a sustainable aquatic ecosystem in cooperation with local governments, educational institutions, and research institutes.

Metrics and targets

 Water withdrawal
Reduce withdrawal of service and industrial water at operating sites by 8% (per unit of net sales) compared with FY2019/03 to 5.31m3/million yen by FY2027/03

FY2025/03 result: 33.9% reduction (per unit of net sales) compared with FY2019/03; 3.81m3/million yen

Note:
Detailed performance data related to the effective use of water resources can be found in Sustainability Data and the Sustainability Data Book 2025.
To improve the reliability of the sustainability information we disclose, some performance figures related to the effective use of water resources for the period from April 1, 2024 to March 31, 2025 in the Sustainability Data Book 2025 have been verified by an independent third party.
Please refer to the Sustainability Data Book 2025 for details.

In the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025, we worked to use water resources efficiently and reduce water withdrawal. As a result, water withdrawal per unit of net sales continued to improve.
The Process Development Center at the Hikone Site, one of the Group’s main business sites, is using a water management application from FTD Solutions to better understand the flow of water throughout cleanroom areas, including cleaning equipment and coater/developers, and thus reinforce water resource management.

Expanding Water Management Application to Entire Hikone Site

Effective use of water resources in the use of sold products

As droughts, water pollution, and other water-related issues emerge in various regions, conserving water resources is becoming ever more important. For the SCREEN Group’s products, especially cleaning equipment, coater/developers, and other semiconductor production equipment, reducing the amount of water and chemicals used during product operation is increasingly significant in terms of effectively utilizing water resources.
As such, the SCREEN Group is advancing efforts in its product design and development to reduce waste liquid and the amount of water and chemicals needed for product operation. At the same time, using the water management application from FTD Solutions , we are working to improve the sustainability of our semiconductor production equipment at the factory level so that we can provide base data to clients that will help them optimize water management at their factories. In addition, to further accelerate development aimed at reducing environmental impact, the Group collaborates with industry organizations through joint development and other initiatives on an ongoing basis.

Reducing waste and increasing the recycling rate

The SCREEN Group considers it important to effectively utilize limited resources and reduce environmental impact by promoting a variety of initiatives, including those to control resource consumption and to reuse and recycle resources. We will continue contributing to the realization of a sound material cycle across society  by reducing waste during the production and disposal of products, enhancing the recycling rate, effectively utilizing resources, and circulating them in a sustainable way.

Metrics and targets

● Waste generated
Reduce the weight of waste generated in business activities by 8% (per unit of net sales) compared with FY2019/03 to 4.36kg/million yen by FY2027/03
FY2025/03 result: 47.6% reduction (per unit of net sales) compared with FY2019/03; 2.48kg/million yen

Recycling rate
Achieve a recycling rate of 98% (in Japan)
FY2025/03 result: 99.1%

In the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025, reflecting efforts to turn waste materials into valuable materials, the weight of waste decreased, and the weight of waste per unit of net sales continued to improve. The recycling rate came to 99.1%, meeting the target.
We strictly manage the way that waste is processed or disposed of. We periodically visit all our waste disposal contractors, from those collecting and transporting waste from our facilities to those performing final disposal, to confirm that they handle waste appropriately. If any deficiencies are found, we swiftly instruct the contractor to take corrective action, always requiring proper waste disposal management.

Note: Detailed performance data related to the effective use of resources can be found in Sustainability Data and the Sustainability Data Book 2025.

Major initiatives
Promoting waste sorting and the conversion of  waste into valuable materials
The SCREEN Group has been conducting thermal recycling to recover the waste heat generated during the incineration of waste plastic as industrial waste and use it as energy. In order to fundamentally reduce GHG emissions from incineration and promote recycling as plastic, we are shifting toward stricter sorting and expanding the sale of waste as valuable materials. The scope of these activities, which began at SPE’s Hikone Site, has steadily expanded to include other group businesses and sites, contributing to plastic waste reduction across the entire SCREEN Group.

Resource conservation efforts
We are combining our ongoing resource conservation efforts, such as minimizing the use of packaging sheets and bubble wrap by reviewing the way products are packed for transportation, with enhanced initiatives to reduce and recycle plastic and other waste.
