Kyoto, Japan – August 31, 2023 – SCREEN Holdings Co., Ltd., together with the National Institutes of Natural Sciences, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (headquarters: Mitaka, Japan; Director General: Saku Tsuneta) and the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (headquarters: Koganei, Japan; president: Hideyuki Tokuda), has been selected following its response to the “Solicitation of Proposals for Information and Communications Technology R&D (R&D of ICT Priority Technology)” issued by Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC). SCREEN Holdings’ application has been accepted in the category for the “Research and development of next-generation adaptive optics devices for satellite optical communications.”

The MIC’s latest call for applications targets the development of next-generation technologies for satellite optical communications. The upcoming project is expected to make a significant contribution to Japan’s ability to compete globally. SCREEN Holdings has been selected to undertake R&D of technologies for adaptive optical devices. These devices are used to compensate for atmospheric fluctuations, which present a major obstacle to improving the speed of satellite optical communications.

Following its selection for this project, SCREEN Holdings intends to utilize the optical technologies it has developed over many years for its direct imaging systems to advance space optical communications. As well as expanding its own business in this area, the company hopes to contribute to the continuing growth of the wider space communications field.
