July 18, 2018

Kyoto, Japan - July 18, 2018 - SCREEN Graphic Solutions Co., Ltd. (SCREEN GA) and Meccanotecnica are collaborating on optimized on-demand production of premium quality books using SCREEN GA's EQUIOS universal workflow and roll-fed full-color high-speed inkjet press, the Truepress Jet520HD, and Meccanotecnica's automatic book folding and sewing machine, the Universe Sewing Web-fed.

On-demand book production has come under the spotlight thanks to the latest digital printing technology now available to print onto a wide variety of papers at high speed and high quality. The Truepress Jet520HD with original high-quality Truepress SC inks achieves the quality expected for high-end publication work and is compatible with a wide range of paper stocks including standard offset coated papers, without the need for pre-treatment. However, technological breakthroughs in the printing process are just one side of the solution and actual on-demand book production cannot be achieved without a business model that uses automated processing, including postpress processing.

The latest version (ver. 3.4) of EQUIOS provides roll to book imposition and variable barcode output functions that support automation with Meccanotecnica's Universe Sewing Web-fed. This workflow collaboration combined with the Truepress Jet520HD's high-quality printing capabilities creates an ideal solution for book printers and publishers to produce high-end hardbound books on demand using section sewn binding, which is the strongest and most secure binding method for producing long lasting books with a superior quality finish.

Comments by Stefano Formentini, Marketing Manager of Meccanotecnica
In today's book industry, especially in the digital environment, finishing automation is essential for cost-effective production of books in short runs. On the prepress side, PDF imposition and generation of dynamic barcodes are important features to enable and enhance automation in the downstream processes.
On the finishing side, Meccanotecnica's Universe family of automatic book folding and sewing machines allows, thanks to barcode technology, the production of premium quality books with high efficiency. The integration with SCREEN's EQUIOS software ensures reliability and productivity throughout the whole workflow.

Comments by Tsuneo Baba, President of SCREEN Graphic Solutions Co., Ltd.
Along with our development of printer equipment, we have spent many years working to refine imposition designs to optimize them for postprocessing and cooperating with a variety of vendors to improve automation. These efforts have led to the creation of advanced workflows that have become one of our key areas of strength, helping to demonstrate our uniqueness and technical superiority to the market.
Our current collaboration with Meccanotecnica, a leading vendor of automatic book sewing equipment, has enabled the automation of a process that provides exceptional durability and quality. When combined with the high-definition printing possible with the Truepress Jet520HD, the two technologies enable the on-demand creation of books with quality and productivity levels that far exceed standard digital printing.

About Meccanotecnica
Founded in 1964 in Italy, Meccanotecnica Group is the world's leading manufacturer of automatic book sewing equipment and lines for book finishing. Globally well-known thanks to its ASTER book sewing machines for offset print finishing, Meccanotecnica has entered the digital print finishing market by developing new solutions to allow cost-effective binding of short runs and the production of high-quality books.
The Universe Sewing Web-fed, newly launched in 2017, was designed to produce high-quality lay flat books directly from the preprinted roll. Universe Sewing performs several processes all in one, including unwinding, cutting, scoring and folding, collating, and sewing. Ideal for web digital printers who have the need to manage short to long runs efficiently, the system avoids non-productive steps such as plating, folding, palletizing and gathering, especially for high signature-count books.
