Dainippon Screen Headquarters Receives ISO 14001
International Certification for its Environmental Management System

Kyoto, March 6, 1997 --- On February 26, 1997, Dainippon Screen Mfg. Co., Ltd., (headquarters: Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto; president: Akira Ishida) received ISO14001 international certification of its headquarters environmental management system from the Japan Audit Certification Organization (JACO). JACO announced its decision on March 6. This certification, which is the first for Dainippon Screen under ISO 14001 guidelines, was based on an evaluation of the Company's environmental goals of reducing waste, promoting the conservation of energy and reducing the volume of paper used.

The management system oversees the activities of approximately 600 employees of the Company's headquarters operating divisions, as well as divisional marketing departments, technical research laboratories and other research and development departments. In addition to these employees, Dainippon Screen's ISO 14001 certification covers approximately 200 people who work at corporate headquarters but are employed by cooperating organizations, companies providing commissioned products and services, and talent pool companies.

In July 1994, Dainippon Screen established the Environment Management Department to ensure product safety and to implement environmental management. In October of the same year, the Company initiated its Environmental Voluntary Plan, which stated that, "Dainippon Screen is exploring technologies that promise to ensure a better and brighter future by enabling mankind to live more harmoniously with nature". Dainippon Screen believes that its determination to uphold this companywide philosophy was a major factor in the success of its ISO 14001 application.

In line with its environmental philosophy, Dainippon Screen will endeavor to promote environmental activities through the expansion of its environmental management system. For this purpose, the Company will strive to obtain ISO 14001 certification for all its facilities by March 1998.
