Business Continuity and EHS

Group EHS Management

The SCREEN Group has obtained certification of four management systems and implements an integrated management system consisting of “Environmental management (E)”, “Health management (H)” and “Disaster prevention and Safety (S)”. We manage various risks and opportunities in a comprehensive manner. These risks and opportunities include climate change, the increasingly stringent international environmental regulations, an increasing need for products with low environmental impact, a rise in occupational safety risks as products become larger, the growing complexity in managing the health of workers as types of employment diversify, and the risk of businesses or the supply chain being interrupted due to natural disasters.

Implementation of Green Value 21 and Management Systems

In 2009 we formulated the Group’s medium-term strategy for EHS initiatives, Green Value (GV) 21, which we have been implementing since then.

Green Value 21 Framework

In April 2017 we began executing Phase IV of GV21. As part of this program, we have formulated a new EHS framework that is based on the “promotion of CSR management with a focus on ESG,” which is one of the pillars of our new three-year medium-term management plan. In GV21 phase IV, we set a long-term goal of reducing total value chain CO2 emissions (per unit of sales) by 20% by fiscal 2026 compared with fiscal 2014, and we are implementing wide-ranging measures toward that goal. We calculated value-chain CO2 emissions by adding CO2 emissions such as those produced by SCREEN products during customer use (Scope 3) to facility CO2 emissions (Scope 1+2).

Managing the Impact of Our Businesses on Local Communities

The Group conducts internal assessments of departments and Group companies that include monitoring of the environmental and social impact of our business activities on local communities. We strive toward the appropriate management of our impact on the environment under our EHS management system. To this end, we employ such means as employee training and facility-related countermeasures to prevent the leakage of hazardous substances into wastewater.
In the fiscal year ended March 31, 2018, we recorded no incidents in which our operations had negative environmental or social impacts on local communities. There were also no economic effects resulting from the relocation of business sites or changes in our businesses.

Business Continuity Management (BCM)

The SCREEN Group has been promoting Business Continuity Management as a key CSR issue. It thereby seeks to minimize damage and ensure the continuation and early resumption of business operations in the event of natural disasters and other emergencies.
In May 2012, we formulated the Business Continuity Management Regulations, which provide guidelines on BCM promotion, management, and implementation structure. Accordingly, in the event of an emergency, such as a large-scale earthquake or outbreak of pandemic influenza, a disaster headquarters will be established headed by the President of the Holding Company.
In the fiscal year ended March 31, 2014, an emergency communication system was introduced to facilitate the prompt confirmation of the safety of all Group officers and employees inside Japan as well as first response in the event of an earthquake of seismic intensity above 5-upper. Also, Survival Cards, listing earthquake survival tips, are distributed to all Group officers and employees inside Japan. Thanks to our ongoing efforts to remind employees of the basics and rules of disaster response, the SCREEN Holdings Head Office and the Hikone Plant and Taga Plant, which include manufacturing facilities for SCREEN Semiconductor Solutions Co., Ltd. and SCREEN Finetech Solutions Co., Ltd., received ISO 22301 certification from the third-party certification organization BSI Group Japan K.K.

These courses include the Basic Course for general staff and managers and the EHS Management Course for specialists, as well as individualized courses for different job categories and units. In the year ended March 2018, we newly established the EHS Expert Training Course and the Product Safety Expert Training Course.
