Dainippon Screen releases new models from Creo
Reinforcing sales of direct plate recorders

Kyoto, April 30, 1997--Dainippon Screen Mfg. Co., Ltd., (headquarters: Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto; president: Akira Ishida) announces its Japan release of three new OEM direct plate recorders supplied from Creo Products Inc. (headquarters: British Columbia, Canada; chairman: Amos Michaelson). With these fresh reinforcements for its"PlateRite" direct plate recorder series, Dainippon Screen plans to aggressively promote local market demand for this important new technology, and will start accepting orders from June 1st.

In planning, designing, and prepress work for color printing, digital data processing using integrated prepress or DTP (desktop publishing) systems has spread widely through the industry. Led by this trend, great attention has been drawn to CTP (computer-to-plate) technologies, which directly plot images onto printing plates and thus entirely eliminate intermediate film processes. In early 1995, Dainippon Screen released the "PlateRite 1080", an in-house developed digital plate recorder, which features output at 4000 dpi (dots per inch), the finest resolution level in the world. In addition to direct sales, Dainippon Screen also supplied this product to several Japanese and foreign prepress machinery vendors on an OEM basis to be sold under their own brand names. In April 1995, Dainippon Screen acquired the exclusive Japanese sales rights for the "Platesetter 3244F" from Creo Products Inc., who currently control more than 50% of the world market for direct plate recorders. As an OEM vendor, Creo Products Inc. supplied the "Platesetter 3244F" to Dainippon Screen, which sold the product locally as the "PlateRite 3244F".

Thus far, 20 PlateRite 1080 units have been installed in Japan and 50 units overseas (including OEM-supplied units), and Dainippon Screen has sold 2 PlateRite 3244F units in the local market.

The new Creo-supplied recorders include the "PlateRite 3244T", the "PlateRite 3244MT", and the "PlateRite 4555MT". The PlateRite 3244T is used with thermal type plates and is generally equivalent to the PlateRite 3244F. The primary difference is that the F type uses a YAG laser (wavelength: 532 nm) for metal-halide emulsion and photo polymer plates, while the new T type incorporates a thermal imaging head with a 830 nm infra-red laser. Like the F type, the PlateRite 3244T can automatically process plates all the way from loading to development, and can handle plate sizes ranging from A2 up to 813 x 1118 mm (32 x 42 inches). The maximum resolution is 2400 dpi and the exposure speed for a single A1 size plate is a phenomenally fast 3 minutes.

The PlateRite 3244MT is only for thermal plates, which must be individually loaded by hand, and can handle plate sizes ranging from 394 x 559 mm (15.5 x 22 inches) up to 813 x 1118 mm (32 x 42 inches). Like the 3244 MT, the PlateRite 4555MT is also designed for thermal plates and requires manual loading, but is built to accommodate larger size plates - from 394 x 488 mm (15.5 x 19.2 inches) up to 1143 x 1397 mm (45 x 55 inches).

In thermal recording, images are formed by infra-red lasers, and thermal plates thus offer higher levels of resolution, printing durability, and latent image stability. These obvious virtues as well as ease of handling in daylight conditions have attracted wide and enthusiastic notice in the industry. In the United States, for example, these types of plates are now used on more than half of Creo's direct plate recorders. Locally, Japan Kodak Inc. has recently announced it will release "Kodak Direct Image Thermal Printing Plate" with an accompanying line of dedicated chemicals and processing devices on the 1st of June.

It is reported that about 500 direct plate recorders for plate sizes larger than A1 are now in operation in the Euro-American printing industry. In Japan, however, only about 20 units are currently in operation, though it is estimated that installations of such recorders will start increasing from this year.

Dainippon Screen is already receiving many enthusiastic inquiries and projects approximately 50 PlateRite recorder installations in the first half of this fiscal year. The company now offers 5 different types of digital plate recorders including the 3 new models and its proprietary PlateRite 1080, providing customers a wide choice of plate specifications and performance characteristics. Dainippon Screen plans to use this powerful lineup to actively promote and accelerate local introduction of direct plate technologies and help Japan's printing and prepress companies keep pace with their peers abroad.
